ATLANTA—Georgia State University Professor of Communication and Lead Faculty of Transcultural Conflict and Violence Initiative (TCV), Dr. Carol Winkler has announced the addition of Dr. Maria Repnikova and Dr. Yi Ding to join our interdisciplinary group of faculty working on issues related to transcultural conflict and violence. Both Repnikova and Ding will join TCV, for Spring semester and continue to work on research areas with TCV’s Presidential Fellows.
Dr. Maria Repnikova is a scholar of global communication, with a comparative focus on China and Russia. Her research examines the processes of political resistance and persuasion in illiberal political contexts, drawing on ethnographic research approaches and extensive time in the field. Maria holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. She speaks fluent Mandarin, Russian and Spanish. The courses taught at GSU include International Communication, Chinese Media, Politics and Society, and Communication in Global Contexts.
Dr. Yi Ding is a tenure-track assistant professor of computer science at Georgia State University. Ding leads a small group of students conducting research in the areas of multimodal machine learning and human-computer interaction. Ding’s interests include how we can use and improve technologies to better understand human behavior and social signals, as well as how these technologies can be used to benefit human health, education, and communities. Before coming to Georgia State, Ding worked in industry for many years as an engineer and researcher. Ding recieved his doctorate in Computer Science from the University of California.
