ATLANTA —The National Communication Association held its 109th Annual Convention in National Harbor, Maryland, November 16-19. This year’s theme was centered around “Freedom” and challenged participants to interrogate questions such as: What does it mean to be free? Is freedom, simply, the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved? Where do we find freedom and how do we get there? Are we free now? Has freedom been reached in the past? Is freedom a goal of the future? Who is free? — Participants could submit papers, panel discussions, posters, and other submissions on the concept of freedom. Georgia State University had 18 participants this year including faculty and students of Transcultural Conflict and Violence Initiative (TCV).
Mor Yachin, Georgia State University PhD Candidate and TCV Fellow presented research titled “Leveraging Emotions to Address Vaccine Hesitancy: Effect of Incidental Positive Emotions on COVID-19 Vaccine-hesitant Individuals’ Risk Perceptions and Persuasion” co-authored with Hue Duong, Georgia State University and Zachary B. Katherine Kountz, Georgia State University student and TCV Fellow, was awarded the 2023 Robert Gunderson Top Paper Award from the Public Address Division at NCA for her paper titled “Democratic Education and the Cultural Politics of the Unschooling Movement” [Read More]
Vithika Salomi, Georgia State University student and TCV Fellow participated in several discussions on topics of Debunking Disimformation and presented research titled “Prebunking misinformation, perceptions about electoral security and voting intentions: A quantitative study” and “Prebunking Misinformation: Testing the effectiveness of using central versus peripheral routes in pre-intervention messages designed to correct misinformation” [Read More]
In addition to these presentations, Dror Walter, Georgia State University, Assistant Professor of Digital Communication; and Transcultural Conflict and Violence Faculty Member, co-authored research was presented as part of Collaborative Spaces Panel #2 sessions. The research titled “Conspiracy Beliefs, Trust, and Vaccine Hesitancy During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Moderating Role of Vaccine Availability” authored by Emily Andrews, Northwestern University.
W Patrick Wade, Georgia State University, Assistant Professor of Communication Faculty and Transcultural Conflict and Violence Faculty Member, participated in the Visual Communication Division meeting discussing planning for those interested in visual communication. The meeting also featured GSU alumni and TCV alumni, Meredith L Pruden.
